Fatherhood taught me that a season can change before you notice it; the camera trained me to pay closer attention. I look for the exchanged glance, the hand that reaches without instruction, and the expression that belongs only to this person.
I still direct the portrait. Direction gives the frame its shape; leaving room gives the person a way to remain inside it.
